2024 - The nuclear tree suggests that Vipera walser Ghielmi, Menegon, Marsden, Laddaga & Ursenbacher 2016 and Vipera barani Böhme & Joger, 1984 should be ranked as subspecies of Vipera berus; Dufresnes et al. 2024.
2024 - The numerous lineages assigned or associated (“cf.”) to Pelophylax ridibundus, P. kurtmuelleri, P. bedriagae, P. cypriensis, P. cerigensis, P. caralitanus all belong to a fairly young diversification (<3.5 My; with extensive admixture across the most divergent lineages in northern Greece) which altogether preliminary suggests a single species with high phylogeographic diversity. Lineages with available names are thus treated as subspecies of Pelophylax ridibundus (Pallas, 1771); Dufresnes et al. 2024.
